Today I received some very sad news from Vicki Matthews in Sydney.
Vicki writes:
Jonti 25/09/99 - 13/10/08
It is with the saddest of hearts that I write this email to let you know that we had to have Jonti put to sleep yesterday afternoon.
He had deteriorated so much in the last few days, that he was merely a shell of his former self. We knew that the time had come for him to finally rest in peace.
We were lucky enough to have a couple of our local vets come over and administer the injections in the front yard and the girls, Brett and I got to see him go very peacefully. He is now about 5 feet under in one section of our front garden – which our neighbour kindly dug up for us with his digger.
Needless to say things aren’t going to be the same around our house for a while, and it is nice to know we have Rosie to fill the void, even if its just that little bit.
If someone had said to me 10 years ago that I would be this upset about losing a dog – I would not have believed them………………….,but then again Jonti wasn’t just any dog!
Hope you are all well and take care,
From a very sad Matthews household
Jonty's registered name was Chilolo Jonty Goes Easy and he died of cancer. His sire was Barry (BISS Ch Annahbar Barrister Brown) and his mum was Sox (Ch Chilolo CP Akobi Gold).
Jonty was sold to Vicki and Brett Matthews as a pet because of his white feet but he developed into such a lovely boy that we showed him at the 2000 RR Specialty under breeder/judge Ms Stacey Davis, O'Baillee Kennels, USA. Jonty was awarded Challenge Dog and Runner Up Best In Show over an entry of almost 170 RRs.
This huge win did not make the slightest difference to Brett and Vicki who loved him for who he was. My sincere thanks go to Brett and Vicki for giving Jonty such a wonderful home. One of these photos is with Vicki in 2000. The other is with Vicki and Brett's first child who Jonty took it on himself to protect.

29 August
I leave for the UK, France and the Cezch Republic to judge their Specialty Show not far from Prague. What a fabulous trip!
In the UK I catch up with lots of RR friends and am able to get to the Richmond Championship show to watch the RR judging which was very interesting. Judging the RR Specialty in the Cezch Republic was a wonderful experience. I am waiting for photos to put them on my web site.
There were 2 shows - one on Saturday 13 September and another the following day. Linda Costa (Sarula RRs formerly of Zimbabwe now Australia) judged the dogs on the first day and I judged the bitches and on the Sunday it was reversed.
We both decided Best in Show both days went to a really lovely veteran bitch but there were some good quality dogs and bitches that were exhibited both days.

20 August
Today Enya whelped her first litter of puppies. After much soul searching as to what sire to select for her, we decided to try frozen semen from Cheryl Currie's lovely dog Batman - Multi Best in Show Aust Grand Champion Caprivi Asgoodasitgets ET.
We are indebted to Cheryl for allowing us to use the very limited semen she has available. Unfortunately, as sometimes happens using AI, the litter was numerically small and Enya only produced 3 puppies - 2 girls and 1 boy.
We were hoping for a boy so we will just have to wait and see how this little guy develops - he is off to a good start with a great ridge, good bone and lovely structure. And with a birthdate of 20.08.2008 - he has to be special!!
17 August

Gee - what a day this was!! The Hound Club of Queensland conducted their championship show and Mrs Gervals from Canada judged the Ridgebacks. There were 44 entered. Bentley ( Chilolo WC Red Hot Bentley - Rusty's litter brother who is co-owned with Charlotte Holman) won the Baby Puppy Dog class with Rusty in second place. Herc was second in Open Dog. Their gorgeous litter sister, Crisp (Chilolo WC Burnt Tua - owned by Anne Christie) was placed 3rd in Baby Puppy Bitch class (we think she should have won!!!).
Whisper was 1st in the Intermediate Bitch class and Beansy was 1st in the Open Bitch class.
Bentley went on to be awarded Best Baby Puppy In Show by Mr O Neilsen also from Canada.
On the same day, the Hound of the Year competition was judged. To qualify, dogs must have won Best in Group at a show on these grounds during the past
12 months. A panel of 3 judges is selected and they judge all the contestants two at a time and only one goes on to the next round. Our gorgeous Minty made it right thru to the final 2 but was beaten by a 6 year old whippet bitch who has won over 100 groups and multiple best in show awards. Minty was Runner Up Hound of the Year for Queensland 2008. We sure are proud of her!!

News from the UK, general specials judge Mr Dennis McMillan awards Fudge BEST IN SHOW at the Hound Association of Scotland from an entry of 1013
hounds.
Fudge (Eng Ch Sonstraal Christmas Eve at Kazval JW) is a daughter
of our boy Sam (BIS/BISS Eng/Aust Ch Chilolo CJ Someday Sam) who now lives with Anthea Fox and Sharon Rossiter in Scotland. Fudge and Minty are cousins as Sam is a litter brother to Minty's mum, Ripple. Sam is handled by Frank Whyte and apparently the weather on the day was almost as bad as weather in Scotland can be which probably explains Fudge's unhappy look in this photo!

The second of the small boys passed away this morning despite all my efforts. The other puppies are doing well. On a brighter note, Emma took Minty to Clifton Show today and Minty was awarded Best of Breed and Junior In Group.
In the evening, Greg looked after Sorrento and her puppies and Emma and I went to Durack for the Beaudesert Kennel Club Show under Hound Specialist
Mr K McGinn. Mr McGinn awarded Herc Best of Breed and Group 2 (Runner Up In Hound Group), Enya was Challenge Bitch, Runner Up Best of Breed and Best Intermediate In Group and Minty was Reserve Challenge Bitch and Junior In Group. We needed some good news after the anxiety of the last few days.

After a very traumatic 24 hours, Sorrento has whelped 14 puppies and we have
8 remaining. Three boys are very small and will be lucky to make it thru the next few days. Sorrento had a caesarian after her third, fourth and sixth puppies were stillborn for no apparent reason. This is the third caesarian in 30 plus years of breeding and her first one. She has settled well with the remaining puppies.
|
Sunday 3/Monday 4 February
Whisper started whelping on Sunday afternoon and finished Monday morning. A total of 14 puppies, sadly the second last girl was stillborn. There are 11 girls and 3 boys so it is a bit uneven but they all have ridges and are all doing well. Check out our Current Litter page for pics.
