30 November
I flew to China today to judge and also to present a seminar on hounds with separate presentations on Rhodesian Ridgebacks and Salukis.
As my Best in Show I selected a beautiful Pembroke Corgi which was bred in China. I was lucky to judge a Taiwan Dog and awarded him a Group 3 placement.
30 November
While I was in China, Julie went to Durack and came away with some lovely results. At the Open Show, Samara was Best of Breed and Sascha Runner Up and Best Open In Group. At the Championship show Sascha was Reserve Dog Challenge, Samara was Challenge Bitch and Runner Up Best of Breed and Tikki was Best RR Neuter at both shows. This is the first time that Sascha as been shown and he was really good. Moved well and never flinched for judges' examination.
I also got to meet a super breed officially known as the Chinese Chongqing Dog (sometimes referred to as the East Sichuan Hound). They are an ancient breed originating from a remote parts of the Sichuan and Chongqing regions in southwest China. Chongqing Dogs are medium-sized with prick ears, short, bristly fur and an adorable face which is kind of between a French Bulldog and a Boxer. They are used for hunting and companions and they are smart, loyal and protective.

Luckily friends looked after my puppies this weekend while I was away at Albury, Victoria, judging for 3 days.
The weather was hot but the grounds were immaculately presented and there were some lovely dogs there. I decided a beautiful Samoyed bitch would be my Best in Show. She was lovely!

12 November
Today Ditto produced a litter of 14 puppies between 4.30am and 2pm, with no veterinary intervention. All puppies have ridges but unfortunately one was still born so she has 13. I have 6 with her and 7 away and am changing them over every 2 hours so that every one of them gets a good start.

Lovely email and pics of Bosley who was born 7 January 2007 from our Herc and Beansy litter. Bosley is a litter brother to our Martini and half brother to Minty.
"Hi Rosemary, It's been a very long time. I hope you are well. I felt compelled to reach out and let you know that our old dog Bosley (son of Herc and Beansy) is still kicking along. He turns 13 in January, and health wise is doing great accept for the odd lump and stiff legs in the winter.
He's been a great family dog and perfect for the kids at all stages of their lives so far. The kids said they'd love to take him out to visit his dad, but I assume Herc has passed on by now??
Hope all is well with you. I've attached some pics of Bos from a day at Woorim beach yesterday. Even in his old age he is still pestering the other dogs ??
Take care.
Regards, James"
5 November
While I stayed home with Taboo, Julie ventured to the Durack shows with Sascha, Samara and Tikki. Sascha was Best of Breed and the judge asked "where have you been hiding this dog?" Samara was Challenge Bitch and Tikki was Best Neuter of Breed.
Taboo had 6 fat puppies all born with beautiful ridges and very healthy. With only 6 I am sure they will grow quickly.

Holly - 4th Place Australian Bred Bitch
Kali - best photo of the show!
Nikki - 1st Place Sire's Progeny Class

Chilolo - Most Successful Breeder

Our Kali - Joey puppies have turned 8 weeks old and have all gone to their new homes with the exception of Zeze who is being collected later this week.
We could not ask for better family homes for our puppies. Unfortunately only one may be shown but it is more important for us to put them in homes where they will be loved and well cared for.
Zeze is coming to Sydney with me this week and will be collected by his new owners, Karen and Greg from Canberra. Zeze is making the most of his time with Kali who is enjoying only having one to play with!

Another successful day in the showring with Tuku being awarded Best of Breed at the Queensland RR Club Open Show and Joey was Best Dog. At Nimbin Julie was awarded Best of Breed and shortlisted for Best in Group with Samara and Solar was Challenge Dog. Solar is on the countdown for his Grand Champion title which requires 1000 points.
A few days ago we took back Sascha from his family who had bought him as a puppy. They could no longer keep him so he has come back to us. He is gorgeous! He is a 'ChatterNik' so his parents are Chatter and Nikki and he is a litter brother to Joey and Samara. I would love to find someone to take him and show him as he is a lovely type, very sound and has attitude! In the meantime he will stay here and learn to be a show dog!

News & Updates

27 August
News in from America about Bristol (Chiastolite's Worldly Traveler of HPK Tropaco, SC) who is a granddaughter of our boy Trio (Am Ch/Aust Sup Ch Chilolo EB Show No Mercy): " Here is a Trio Grandbaby, Bristol. Anna has pretty much been unstoppable with this girl 8 shows, 7 wins, 2 major, 4 BOW. Needs 1point to finish conformation and 2 points to finish field championship, which we are all positively thinking she may finish both titles and be dual Ch by next weekend at 20 mos of age.
She is tearing up the coursing field, leaving top RR specials in the dust. And some even pull from coursing saying they cannot beat Bristol and of course break the major. Kay is thrilled with Anna and thank you again Emma for recommending her. Trio and Juweels temperaments have come through and Anna cannot say enough good things about her rock solid temperment she has. Thank you again for allowing Trio to enter into my breeding program."

23 August
While I was away judging in Adelaide, Julie ventured to a show in Brisbane with Solar, Tikki and Samara. Solar was awarded Reserve Challenge Dog, Samara was Challenge Bitch and Tikki was Best Neuter of Breed. Not bad results at all!!
|
11 August
I had a lovely day today judging Racing Greyhounds at Brisbane Royal Exhibition (The Ekka). The racing greyhounds are exactly that - they are not show dogs and are either puppies (too young yet to race) or they are currently racing or they have retired.
There were some lovely dogs and all with beautiful temperaments and so well behaved. Anyone who is reading this and is thinking of a retired greyhound as a family pet, I can highly recommend them and would be happy to help you find a suitable dog if you contact me.

Lovely message from Mel who bought Pablo from our "Tess-Nik" litter born 10 April this year:
Dear Rosemary,
I am just wondering if you might have sent us a cat cross rather than a pure dog? He seems to think he should be on a lap rather than anywhere else? He also sometimes pretends to not understand his training "words" (even though he has done them the last 10 times)? He also doesn't have any idea or care that he is growing so quickly and our legs go numb? Is this a #iblamerosemarygreen thing? Or a Ridgeback thing ??. Our beautiful boy Pablo says hi ???? and that he is happy and well X. Mel

I don't like receiving these messages even though we all know it is part of life but it is always sad to read. Rahma was a litter sister to Trio and lived with Mark, Virginia and later Emily in Tasmania.
"Rahma Born 20-08-2008 - 05-08-2019.
Good Evening Rosemary, I hope you are keeping well. It's with heavy heart that our lovely girl Rahma was put to sleep today. She's had a lovely life of nearly 11 years, most of that time was spent claiming the most comfortable spot in the house, training our boy Rio who has spent his entire life following her nose to tail like a baby Elephant & being the most maternal Rhodesian with our 2 legged baby Emily who formed the most lovely relationship with Rahma over the last 4.5 years since her birth.
She was in good health for nearly her whole life with her taking a big turn just a few days ago, cancer of the spleen was the diagnoses but she had been playful and comfortable until just a few days ago when all of a sudden everything changed and she became very unwell. Everything that we love about Rhodesians, Rahma had in spades. Rahma was our first Female Rhodesian after a lifetime of boys and she was a delight, her maternal instinct was amazing and her bond with Emily will no doubt have life long effects on Emily's nature. So thank you to both yourself & Emma for breeding such a lovely line of Rhodesians. With lots of love Mark, Virginia & Emily"
Thank you Mark and Virginia for giving her and Rio such a lovely life.

25 May
It is always so sad when these dogs leave us and I really appreciate owners letting us know when their dogs cross the rainbow bridge. Received this email today from Leigh in Brisbane who had Sekai. Sekai was from our Whisper/Cracker litter born 4 February 2008:
"For those of you who don't already know, Sekai passed peacefully with assistance yesterday on a glorious sunny day in one of her favourite spots on the lawn. I have had the good fortune of having some wonderful dogs over the years but Sekai was especially sensitive, loving and loyal and I shall miss her beyond measure. I thought you might enjoy a very few pictures of the passing of the years. Leigh"

I was lucky enough to be invited to judge the Belgian Rhodesian Ridgeback Club specialty show today. It was a lovely day with a good entry of just under 90 dogs. Some lovely dogs entered. My Best In Show was a gorgeous bitch bred in Sweden and my Best Opposite Sex was a lovely male who was related to my Nikki!!
Both the dog and bitch were liver noses which is a first time for me to put two livers up. The grounds were very well set up and there was a lovely lunch time BBQ of Belgian patties and kebabs. The Club gave me a super gift of a dog mat which folds up and has the writing of "Very Important Rhodesian Ridgeback" on the front.

21 May
The worst thing about having dogs is when they leave us. I received this email yesterday from Katalin in Sydney. Jerry was Enya's brother and 13 is a good age for Ridgebacks.
" Dear Rosemary and team, My heart is broken - Jerry (Seinfeld) of Sydney, born 10 February 2006, left us to join a good friend on the eternal hunting grounds on 8 April 2019, after a long, healthy and very good life. Jerry had a lot of love to give and he received a lot, as well. He was a great companion - his health was excellent throughout his 13 years.
He had no arthritis, no pain, no cancer, and eventually it was an enlarged heart, and probably old age, that took him. He will be remembered always. Thank you so much for giving us the joy of having him with us for so long. Attaching a picture of Jerry a few days before his passing.
Thank you, Katalin"

A full on weekend of shows in Brisbane resulted in mixed results but mostly good results! Nikki was awarded Runner Up Exhibit In Group on Saturday, Best In Group and Runner Up Best In Show on Sunday but came right back down to earth on Monday when the judge could only award him Reserve Challenge! The ups and downs of dog shows!! Tuku, our gorgeous Herc/Holly baby, was Best Baby Puppy In Group on Sunday and Best Baby Puppy In Show on Monday! Tikki, handled as always by Julie, was awarded Best Neuter in Group on the Saturday so overall we had a great weekend.

News & Updates

5 March
Received good and bad news today. The good news was from Lesley and her family at Shepparton who have a Herc/Holly baby, formerly known as Grace but now is Theia:
"Hi Rosemary, Thanks for all that info. I have Grace (Theia) booked in for her 12 weeks inoculations … She is settling in very well and is learning about her surrounds. She likes mince above all else, and climbs into her chicken wings with enthusiasm. They just take a bit of chewing… Stryker is now wagging his tail when they interact, but he still hasn't been able to bring himself to play (he is an old man now). Charlotte (the cat) and Grace are sleeping on the same couch or bed, so that is progress.
Grace won't always be allowed on the bed, but we haven't told her that yet. She sits for her food (clever girl that she is) and, in typical RR fashion, is very trainable - she just wants to please. We love her dearly and thank you again for helping us to adopt her at short notice. She is always happy and loving and has helped all the family to concentrate on her wellbeing, rather than our grief. I'll send more photo updates periodically… Kind regards, Lesley"
The bad news was from Cheryl and Grant who have Scout and Gunnar from our 'Boonik' litter (Taboo/Nikki). For some unknown reason Scout got out of their house yard and they think went to visit the children across the road and, or course, was hit by a car. The driver didn't stop. Scout was rushed to the emergency vet and has multiple fractures of her pelvis but is expected to make a full recovery given time and lots of therapy and TLC.
Cheryl and Grant are beside themselves and blame themselves for this accident. The vet bill is expected to be $15,000+ so if anyone can spare a few dollars to put into the Gofundme account, it would be much appreciated.
Also on the weekend, Spud from our Herc/Holly litter followed Jasmine to the car unbeknownst to her and her husband. When they went to drive off Spud's leg was hit so his injuries are not as serious as Scout, but still a significant vet bill and lots of self blame.
Probably a timely reminder for everyone that RRs are notoriously stupid when it comes to vehicles so everyone needs to be extra vigilant, especially when puppies are young. The self blame and anxiety of the owners is one thing, but the reality of exorbitant vet bills are another.

I received this lovely email and photos today. This is what makes breeding worthwhile:
"Dear Rosemary, My name is Alanah and I am emailing as I am interested in purchasing a puppy from one of your future litters. I am familiar with your bloodlines as my family has owned two of your ridgebacks. "Hunter" out of Ripple and Herc's 2007 litter (who sadly passed away in January this year) and "Summer" out of Beansy and Herc's 2006 litter, who is well and as energetic as ever.
My ridgebacks have been such loyal, fun, loving companions who I absolutely adore. I love the personality, temperament and looks of your ridgebacks and would love to opportunity to have another. If available, I would be interested in puppies from a litter towards the end of the year or early next year depending on your availability.
Thank you very much for your time and I look forward to hearing from you. Kind Regards, Alanah

Love receiving updates from people who have bought our puppies. This email and pics are from Mark and Trudi and their family in Melbourne who bought Lily from our Solar-Tikki litter born November 2017 : "Hi Rosemary, Lily is going well and is loving life being a favourite sister with the boys. Likes hanging around wherever we are. Kind Regards, Mark"
Bit sad today as Holly has gone back to Don and Jennie.
Holly is very much loved and took no time at all to get back into her routine watching TV with Don with her head under his knee!
We are very grateful to both Don and Jennie for agreeing to let us have puppies with Holly.

Just before Christmas I had sad news from Lesley in Sydney. Lesley had owned Alex since he was quite young and sadly he crossed the rainbow bridge in December. Lesley sent this photo of him saying "This is one of my favourite photos of Alex. Being a couch potato squinting into the sun, somehow squeezed into the chair, front paws crossed (as they often were when he was relaxed). Thank you Lesley for give Alex such a wonderful home for 12 years. Alex was from our Herc - Ripple litter born on New Years Day 2007.

This year has started off well for Nikki's progeny. Yesterday Gaia, bred/owned/handled by Helen in Canberra, was awarded Best Junior In Hound Group and followed up today with a big 16 point Best of Breed. These were the final points Gaia needed for her Australian Championship and she is not a year old yet. She has such a pretty head and expression and lots of potential in the show scene. Gaia is by Nikki and her mum is Helen's home bred girl, Punky who is a granddaughter of our gorgeous girl Enya. Best of luck this year Helen and Gaia!
