Received this lovely email today. Flo is from our Solar / Image litter:
"Hi Rosemary - Here are a couple of photos of Flo. We love her so much - cannot imagine life without her! She is the biggest sweetheart. Merry Christmas, Tam, Jay, Hayden and Bronte"

15 December - Tuesday
Tikki's puppies are 2.5 weeks old today and have started on solid food. I have split them so that 7 had some solids and then filled up on Tikki while the other 8 were having their main course! I am so impressed at Tikki and the way she has handled this huge litter. They are all so fat and healthy and she is doing an amazing job.

So very sad to hear of the passing of John Forbes last month. John was a big fan of our Ridgebacks and I was lucky to have a long chat to him in Sydney two weeks before he passed away.
We spoke of many things in the dog world not least of all Ridgebacks - the breed we both love. John told me this photo of him awarding Trio and Emma Best in Group and completing Trio's Grand Champion title is a photo he shows to trainee judges saying this is his ideal of what a Ridgeback should look like.
He has also awarded Kali a Best in Group and was always appreciative of our dogs whenever he judged them. I was very honoured for him to volunteer this comment and I feel privileged to have known him. RIP John Forbes.
This article appeared in Dogs NSW Journal:
In Loving memory - John Forbes 1/9/1947 - 27/11/2015
It is with deep sadness that Dogs NSW informs the dog world of the passing of John Forbes on Friday 27th November 2015.
John was born in South Africa and came from a show family, who were involved in Rhodesian Ridgebacks in the early 1950s. He immigrated to Australia in 1972 and decided within the year, that he had to have a dog, so he bought an Old English Sheepdog, thus commencing his show career within Australia in 1973. In the same year he also inherited his first Basenji, and it was then that the breed took over his life, breeding over 100 Champion Basenjis, both in Australia and overseas.
John commenced his judging career in 1988 and he became an All Breeds Judge in 2005. He was a Deputy Chairman of Dogs NSW Board of Directors in 2007, a Director from 2005-2006 and was currently Chairman of the Junior Handler Working Party, a position in which he contributed so much time and effort for future handlers.
He had judged in numerous countries all over the world, which included Specialty shows in Sweden, Germany, the UK, and New Zealand. As well as his great love of Basenjis, he also had involvements with Old English Sheepdogs, Australian Terriers, Afghan Hounds, Italian Greyhounds and Whippets.
John was well known as being kind and generous and always quick to offer assistance to anyone in need. He never seemed to let anything dampen his spirits, or his independence and certainly lived his life to the full.
There will be no funeral held, as this was John's wish, but Dogs NSW have been advised there is a possibility of a memorial service for him, with a view to holding it on the grounds at Orchard Hills. We will keep members informed.
There will be more tributes to John in the February edition of Dogs NSW magazine.
Rest in Peace - John Forbes

Tikki's puppies are continuing to grow. All healthy and drinking very well and she is coping easily. She spends quite a bit of time away from them through the day and comes for a walk with her dad Biko every morning.

Tikki's puppies are 2 weeks old today. Cannot believe how fat and contented they are!
She is doing a fabulous job with them.
|
8 December
Tikki's babies are 12 days old today and almost climbing out of the box when they wake up! They are fat, strong and healthy and she is looking good and eating big meals to keep up the milk supply. Hopefully soon I might get a full night's sleep. At the moment I am changing them over every 3-4 hours and they are really doing well.
|
3 December
All 15 babies are doing really well. Tikki is eating properly now and is doing an amazing job of producing enough milk for these puppies who are fat and strong. I tried to 'top up' some of them with supplementary milk a few days ago but they got a bit of diarrhoea so I must have been over feeding them! I have now left it up to Tikki and she is managing really well. She has 8 on her all the time - the little girl stays with her and the other 14 swap 7 on and 7 off every 3 hours and everyone is happy.

Saturday 28 November
Received this email today - Hannah is a litter sister to Cracker:
"Hi Rosemary - Another year on, and I wanted to update you on Hannah. She turned 14 yesterday - Yay! and while she is not exactly 'going strong', she is still 'going'. I have to lift her up and she goes to the toilet on her bed often (a laundry problem but I'm dealing with it), plus she has many, many lumps (some of which are probably cancerous).
She underwent surgery in April this year to have a huge cancerous lump removed from her chest (at age 13!). I was scared she wasn't going to make it but the Vet was happy with her & she came through the Anaesthetic remarkably well. The Vet says I will know when the time is right to have her put to sleep but that she seems ok at present, and I keep thinking...'let's just get through Christmas', and so on............I have my 6 year old Black Lab "Neo" who will be of great comfort when the time comes.
Anyway, I hope you, your family and all your lovely Hounds have a wonderful Christmas and New Year, and I will continue to stay in touch with updates on Hannah, but who knows for how much longer. I have included some photos this time - one was taken just a week ago (she's sleeping), and the others taken in June.
Take care, Lisa"

26 November
Early this morning we welcomed 15 new babies. The sire is Chukkie (Aust Ch Chilolo Alaska Blue) and the mother is Tikki Tavey (Aust Ch Chilolo WBI Bikwa). This is Tikki's first litter and we used frozen semen collected and stored from Chukkie 8 years ago.
Many thanks to Ron Newland of Ice Age Breeding for his expertise in producing such a large litter of healthy babies. We look forward to watching them develop and grow.

19-22 November
Caboolture Kennel Club held 4 shows with a panel of international judges over the last few days. On Thursday evening Kali won her class and Solar was not shown.
On Friday we did better with Julie and Solar being awarded BEST EXHIBIT IN HOUND GROUP over a very strong group of well performed breeds under Mr Derek Seouw from Malaysia. Kali was Challenge Bitch.
Saturday Kali was again Challenge Bitch and Best of Breed and Solar was Reserve Challenge Dog under Mrs D Brown from New Zealand and on Sunday, hound specialist judge Mr J Bryson from NSW awarded Kali Best of Breed, shortlisted her for Best In Group and awarded her Best Australian Bred in the hound group and Solar was Reserve Challenge Dog.
I also judged the Utility Breeds (Group 6) at the all breeds open show on Saturday and awarded Best in Show to a lovely Samoyed Dog and Reserve in Show to a cheeky Cairn Terrier. All in all a successful weekend and the dogs performed really well which is all we ever ask of them.

Received this sad email today: "Hi Rosemary, Some sad news Duke passed away today. He would have been 15 in Feb next year. He was losing some condition and his back legs were giving way. It is so hard after all these years to say good bye to and old much loved and cherished friend. Thank you for what you did for us back all those years, you do not realise the joy your dog gave to our family and the tough times he help pull us through. Much love, Greg and Marg Baker"
Duke was Ch Chilolo Royal Blue and was born 2 February 2001 - litter brother to Chukkie and Sorrento. He had a wonderful home with Greg and Margaret who, when they first came to visit our dogs, asked if it was OK to have only one RR and that it be an outside dog. Three months after they went home with Duke, Greg called to say Duke had the run of their house, slept in their bedroom and they wanted a second one for company for him so they bought Sharni! Emma showed Duke to his Australian Champion title which he gained easily and he was awarded Runner up Best in Specialty Show Sydney in 2002. Sincere condolences to the Baker family and sincere thanks for giving Duke and Sharni such a wonderful home. RIP Duke.

Today Kali's half sister, Sasha, went lure coursing with Julie and they both had a lovely day.

23 August
Just received good news that I have passed my Group 7 exam which leaves one more group to pass before I am an All Breeds judge. Look forward to that exam this time next year!
Aleisha and Ace take out Best Neuter in Hound Group at Durack. Way to go Aleisha and Ace! Love this dog. And in the meantime Ace's brother in Scotland, Brad, has sired a litter of 9 puppies - all with ridges and all looking good at this early stage. We will be watching with interest how they grow.
22 August
Great day at Durack at the Queensland Dogs Spectacular Show. Kali was not entered but Chatter was awarded Challenge Bitch, Runner Up Best of Breed and Best Junior in Hound Group and I got to show her as Julie is, unfortunately for her, hobbling round on crutches.
Rachel and Django made their debut into the show ring and although they did not win their class, Rachel did a great job with Django who was looking at anything and everything that moved!! First time is always the worst!!
And to top it off Aleisha and Ace competed in the Agility competition - these photos tell the story and they look fantastic. I love the way there is such obvious affection and respect between them! Ace also was awarded Best Neuter in the Hound Group to top off a great day. Well done also to Katherine with Oshun who was Reserve Challenge Bitch and with Asa who won her class. Congratulations everyone!!
This is getting a bit complicated but this email was sent to Emma and myself and is referring to a Cynara puppy called Tyge who is sired by Trio in America. The email was sent to the breeder, Elaine, and we are very pleased to have such good feedback from Trio's progeny:
Hi ladies,
Just wanted to share a tiny brag from an excited puppy owner. Elaine
Hi Elaine,
Proud pup parent here! Tyge was publicly called out at dog class tonight and invited to attend a confirmation competition that takes place in about a month. He was the only pup recognized and the ladies who run the class fawn over him. They noted that he would be quite young but thought it would be a great opportunity for the both of us and that other RR owners would be pleased to see him. He has so much spirit in the ring where we do our work and he is SMART. He catches on quickly and aims to please. Of course he doesn't always act like a perfect angel but I love his sass. So there ya have it! Hope all is well with you, Mark, and your pack. XO Krista

Received this email from a lady who has just had her old RR put to sleep and her youngster is lonely so she is in a hurry to buy a new puppy. I suggested she contact one of the breeders I am happy to 100% recommend and this is the response I received:
Rosemary - thankyou so much for giving my details to sandra... she has sent me photos of her 3 females and for once out of all the so called ridgeback breeders i've contacted had nice looking pups.. i could tell straight away from the pics that these were nice dogs and then i looked up the breeding and see one of your dogs which i've always wanted as i think your dogs are gorgeous and then the lionveldt breed which i had bred to 14 yrs ago and loved my pups so thankyou thankyou and thankyou... but you could tell just from what she sent thru she has bred quality... i had 2 others send me blurred type pics of parents that were reg'd on dogsonline and you could tell the parents weren't quality and neither were the pups and still asking $1500-$2000 and i can see why pics were blurred as not good looking ridgebacks, totally different to the quality of what you own and some of the other breeders so i'm very happy...
i spoke to sandra this morning and she was so nice and helpful so have to organise a day when she's free and i'll drive down and get one..so thankyou so much again for your help and really appreciate you trying to help me... a new addition to the funny farm here will do mia (my dog) and i the world of good.. i can't wait... lois

Brisbane Royal Exhibition time again and this year the judge, Mr Alfredo Gomez from Columbia awarded Challenge Bitch and Best of Breed to our gorgeous girl Kali (BIS Ch Chilolo EBY Kalahari Gold AI).
The following day he shortlisted her to the final 7 for Best in Hound Group so we were very happy that Mr Gomez recognised the quality of this girl. Reserve Challenge Bitch and Runner Up Best of Breed was Tikki Ti Toe (Ch Chilolo WBI Bikwa). Challenge Dog was Lincoln (Ch Chilolo MT Belmont Breeze) and Reserve Challenge Dog was Solar (Ch Kysaridge CeeZu Solar Gold).
We over the moon that the judge selected our dogs for recognition at such a prestigious show and kept it all 'in the family'. Kali, Tikki and Lincoln are all Herc grandkids and Solar is a great grandson of Herc. Lincoln was Best of Breed at the Royal last year and Tikki was Reserve Challenge Bitch. What an amazing influence Herc has had on our RRs! Thanks to Julie and Katherine for helping out on the day. Also well done to Katherine for winning her class with Asa.

Exciting news from the UK. Brad (Chilolo SHHS Shoot For The Moon) has produced his second litter for Sonstraal Kennels. A total of 9 puppies have been welcomed into the world - no ridgeless, no ds to date, all healthy wriggling babies. Look forward to watching them grow and develop.

As so often happens in the dog show world, Kali and Lincoln went from Challenge at Brisbane Royal on Friday to 2nd in their respective classes today LOL As usual they both performed well and we were very happy with them. Wouldn't swap them for the world!! Chatter made an appearance today and managed to win her Junior Bitch class handled by Julie.
14 August
Brisbane Royal Exhibition time again - Queensland's most prestigious dog show. We had a lovely day with good company, some nibblies and a glass of wine or three and in addition our dogs did us very proud. Our gorgeous girl Kali was awarded Best of Breed and was then shortlisted to the final 7 for Best in Hound Group against some very tough competition. Julie with Tikki was Reserve Challenge Bitch and Runner Up Best of Breed, Lincoln came out of retirement and was awarded Challenge Dog (he was Best of Breed last year) and Solar and Julie were awarded Reserve Challenge Dog. Thanks to Katherine who handled Tikki to RUBOB because Julie was in the ring with Lincoln and we were not allowed to swap handlers. Lovely to see Julie and Katherine doing so well as they are both comparative newcomers to showing and are both so keen to learn. Congratulations to both of you!!
2 August

This photo was received yesterday. What a gorgeous puppy with lovely movement for one so young. She is sired by Trio in America and we will be watching her development with great interest. Elaine her breeder, says "Yesterday, Clancy received her 2nd set of vaccines. Today seemed a good time to let her out of the yard for her first hike to the pond. She was super excited so it was hard to get any movement shots but I managed to get one shot that shows she has potential in the show ring. I think she has a lot of potential to be a duck diving dog! Loved the water and mud. Elaine"

On Saturday Kali was Best of Breed and Group 2 (Runner Up Best in Hound Group) at Goombungee Show and on Sunday she was Best of Breed and shortlisted for Best in Group at Durack against very strong competition. Received this email today which is good news. Chimahnu is from our Herc and Ripple litter:
"Hi Rosemary, Today was Chimahnu's last dose of chemo! He is so happy and healthy, and absolutely loving life. It's the best we've seen him in years!
It's also nice to see Sikhali giving him attention again, when he was sick she tended to keep to herself but they're back to the way they used to be.
The vets love Chimahnu and have said they will miss seeing him every week.
They're great, but I hope we don't have to be there too often in the near future (other than check ups). Every day we have with him is a bonus, and we hope we have a lot of days to come. Jess, Greg, Rogan, Kyron, Chimahnu & Sikhali "

I had a sad phone call from Rene in Sydney today regarding the loss of his treasured dog, Harry. Harry was born on 23 November 2000 and was a litter brother to our Beansy. Their father was Rommel (Sagwazi Chocolate Monty) and mum was Candy (Ch Chilolo Go For Gold). Rene said his final goodbye to Harry two days ago and sent this email to us today "PATA sponsored The Good Dog Easter Parade held in Gladstone Park (Sydney) on the weekend. We donated $500 worth of flowers (given as awards) in Harry's name. They mentioned Harry on the day and posted on Facebook yesterday.

I love receiving this type of email. Zara is from our Makani - Nala litter and is obviously much loved!!
"Hi Rosemary, How are you? And your dogs? Just thought I'd update you on Zara. She is now almost 9 months old, but still thinks she is a tiny puppy and tries to curl up in our laps when watching TV (cricket is her favourite ??).
Zara has the best temperament and wants to be friends with everyone. She very easily wins a place in everyone's heart that she meets. She still loves the beach, well mainly the sand where she can't go past a good face plant and body roll, and she is getting more adventurous going into the waves. We have also taken her on a couple of walks with a ridgeback group here on the Gold Coast and she loves getting into mischief and having fun with the other dogs.
Thank you so much for Zara. We absolutely love and adore her. We would love to get another ridgeback puppy so please let me know if you are planning another litter mid-way through this year. We are hoping to get a boy if that's possible. Also if it's possible, Gregg and I would love to bring Zara out to your property, at some time, so she can meet her dog family. Cheers, Victoria and Gregg"

Lovely weekend at Casino Kennel Club with great results. My gorgeous girl Kali was Best of Breed both days, Group 2 (Runner Up in Hound Group) on Saturday and Group 1 (Best Exhibit in Hound Group) on Sunday. Karen's boy Zimba (Trio/Ruby) was Challenge Dog both days with her young boy Tao (Cracker/Minty) Reserve both days and Karen's girl, Ruby (Barron/Crisp) was Reserve Challenge Bitch to Kali both days. Julie had fun showing our naughty baby, Chatter, who kept everyone entertained with her antics in the ring although she was well behaved sometimes!!
And at Gladstone Kennel Club on Saturday Susie Carige handled our girl Bling (Barron/Enya) to Challenge bitch which gave Bling her Australian Champion title. Thanks Susie!

Congratulations on Andrew with Cooper who were awarded Best of Breed at the Canberra Royal on 28 February against some really tough competition. Judge was Mrs P Trotter, a hound specialist from the USA and Cooper is from our Biko/Martini litter.
Image is definitely pregnant and is due to have her puppies at the end of this month. Dad is Solar so it will be interesting to see what they can produce.

I am glad I do not live in California! These horrific photos are of Minerva, a girl bred by Robert who bred our boy Herc. Minerva was bitten by a spider in January.
"Here are the comparison pictures of Minerva's leg at Day 1 at the vet, debridement of the spider-induced necrotic tissue, and Day 29, today, when the bandages are no longer necessary.
Wet-into-dry bandages were used daily for the first week, then dry with the aid of Manuka Honey 16+ provided by RR colleagues in Portland. I am now using Emu oil on the wound to help minimize scarring and hair loss.
Folks in CA who have to deal with black widows and brown recluse spiders are at risk for these kinds of injuries. "

News from the US this morning, Emma handled Trio to Best of Breed under well known judge, Mr Bill Shelton, which gave Trio the final points he needed for his American Champion title. He has been to a total of 6 shows since going to the US a couple of years ago so that is quite an achievement.

Honestly some young vets just horrify me. Sedation to look at Amber's stomach??
Received the following email from Lorraine in far north Queensland "New vet, just out of kindergarten, had to look at Ambers tummy, as a rash had developed, we had never seen anything like it so off to vet.
We walk in and he is amazed at how big she is for 16 months. He thinks there will be trouble with her and maybe need some sedation to be able to turn her over. I said that wasn't going to happen. He said that vets had been bitten trying to roll big dogs over?
I told Amber to down and roll over, so this big nasty dog lay down and rolled over to show all her tummy. He was gobbed smacked. Then he wants to insert needle into one of the blisters and was not sure if he could. I just took her head in my hands and told him to go ahead. She put all her trust in me and all that happened was her eyes went really wide at the needle prick but she never moved.
So proud of her. But still waiting for results. Take care and hope you have had a drenching. Lorraine and Amber"

Well the first shows of the year have been successful. At Burnett KC in Queensland Julie and Tikki Tavey went Best of Breed at both shows and Solar was Challenge Dog. Bling was reserve challenge bitch both days. It is almost a year to the day when Julie won Best of Breed with Tikki at her first show at Burnett this time last year. Way to go Julie and TT!
And in New South Wales at Taree Kennel Club, Karen and Tao (Cracker / Minty) were awarded an 11 point Challenge on Friday and Minor Puppy In Group. On Saturday they were Minor Puppy In Group again and on Sunday Tao was Minor Puppy In Show. Way to go Karen and Tao! This puppy has a big future - he is gorgeous!

Wonderful news from Western Australia regarding Zali who had her front leg and shoulder removed because of bone cancer: " Hi Rosemary - Zali is now 14 months post op and no complications, she is cancer free and already surpassed the 6 months the vets said we could get if we amputated. We are so happy we decided to do this for her. Here is a recent photo of Zali, she is the best big sister and loves to sun her self all day until we make her come into the shade or into the air con! Haha .

Received this amusing email from Lorraine in far north Queensland. Amber is from our Chukkie/Martini litter:
"Dear Rosemary,
We had an interesting year; some unexpected kindness from friends, some disappointments re family, a burst of excellent health followed by some medical bad news. We endured and just got on with our lives. We celebrated 50 years of a good marriage and realized how blessed we are. Amber continues to fill our life with joy and love.
This girl has filled our house with laughter and pure love. She continues to amaze us with her intelligence and ease of learning. She wakes us up at exactly 10 minutes to 6 so we never miss the weather bureaus' 6am reading. We wonder how she knows and think that it is because she sleeps on our bedroom mat and has heard that alarm ever since she arrived here. I have had a few falls and she knows she has to go get dad, and she pulls and tugs on his shorts legs until he realises I am down. She lays beside me and keeps poking me with her nose and then tries to roll me over with her paw. Rod arrives and all is well.
She is big and beautiful and runs our day. Rosemary I can never thank you enough for this beautiful dog. Sending a photo of Amber, she hates the noise of the Vac and will put her head under anything to hand. She isn't frightened just annoyed as she wants to sleep!!! Hoping the New Year is filled with small every day blessings and green, green grass.
Take care Rod, Lorraine and Amber"
